- Critical Nutrients for the 21ST Century. Part 1 - Newsletter #20
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who divide the world into two kinds of people and those who don’t. I am clearly in the former camp, and in this case we will divide people into those who are pro-pill and those who are anti-pill.
- Sleep Disorders - Newsletter #19
As winter approaches and our available daylight dwindles, maladies related to low melatonin levels are on the increase. As melatonin is our sleep hormone, and is regulated by natural daylight cycles, we in the modern world are most susceptible to SAD (seasonal affected disorder), and sleep disorders, due to our dependence on artificial light.
- Digestive Distorders - Newsletter #18
The prevalence of digestive disorders these days is indicative of both a lack of necessary nutrients and of dietary patterns that are not supportive of digestive well-being.

The popularity of the so-called "green" drinks has lead to an explosion of product in the marketplace.
- Let's Talk About Sex - Newsletter #16
Newsletters from this point on will be less opinionated and more focused on general health and well-being. While I have enjoyed venting and ranting with (or at) you, that shall now be confined to other venues and here I will be more professional and less personal.
So…let’s talk about sex.
- KNOW YOUR RIGHTS - NEWSLETTER #15
As we here in Canada relax into the comfort of a medical system that looks so good in comparison to that of the U.S., especially if you’ve seen Michael Moore’s new documentary “Sicko”, it behooves us to take a closer look in light of some disturbing new information.
- WATER WATER - Newsletter #14
“Water, water, everywhere…nor any drop to drink”: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
- IODINE MADNESS - Newsletter #13
This morning I ingested 12mg of iodine although the Recommended Daily Allowance in North America is about 150mcg (1000micrograms in one milligram). So I took about 80 times the recommended amount. Am I insane? Possibly, nonetheless, there is a certain amount of method to my madness.
- HAIR LOSS - Newsletter #12
In acknowledgement of the re-issuing of my book on hair loss (previously titled “Hair Loss Prevention” now called “Healthy Body, Healthy Hair”, by Ken Peters and Nick Waddell) from Apple Publishing, I shall devote this article to the subject.
- LONGEVITY - Newsletter #11
The boomers are aging and they don’t like it. After creating the youth culture and the societal obsession with it, we found that we were not going to stay young forever.
- THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN - Newsletter #10
A recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study done on white members of the U.S. Military. In this study the soldiers with the highest levels of vitamin D were 62% less likely to develop M.S. than those with low levels.
- Dangers of Microwaved Foods - Newsletter #9
Over 90% of North American households use microwave ovens for some if not most of their cooking. I personally believe that we should avoid microwaved food like the plague.
- Follow-up to Newsletters # 6 and # 7 - Newsletter #8
1. "Current use of calcium supplements was associated with increased risk of hip…and vertebral…fractures; current use of "Tums' antacid tablets was associated with increased risk of fractures of the proximal humerus…" Reported in the "American Journal of Epidemiology", from a study done by the University of Sydney, following over 9,000 white American women over 6.6 years....
- Dirty Secrets of the Health Food Industry - Newsletter #7
My disillusionment with this industry came about 6 years ago at the Vancouver CHFA trade show. One company had a giant spinning wheel offering discounts and prizes for orders placed at the show, another had a plexiglass box with money blowing around inside for some lucky soul to humiliate themselves in, and a sports company had a bimbo flitting around in hot-pants, flaunting her cleavage while offering to sell pictures of herself for $5 each.
- Killing with Calcium - Newsletter #6
If a little is good, a lot must be better, right? How else to explain the medical profession sending people (women mostly) off to take 1200, 1500 and even 2000 mg of elemental calcium per day. Even the medical profession will acknowledge that all the calcium in the world won’t rebuild bone-mass, but, at best, simply forbid further withdrawal. Yet they continue to promote absurd amounts of calcium, without any evidence to support their position, and in the face of evidence that suggests that huge amounts of calcium are in fact dangerous.
- Cold & Flu Season - Newsletter #5
The couple that I discussed in last months’ newsletter wanted me to clear up a mistaken impression I created when I failed to reveal the breadth of their situation. I inadvertently minimized the length of time it has taken for them to deal with the side effects of pesticide poisoning.
- Why Organic? - Newsletter #4
Organic food sales reached $3.1 billion in Canada last year ($13.8 billion in the U.S.) as more and more consumers decided to avoid pesticides (and genetically modified foods) as much as possible.
- Arthiritis and the Blood Type Diet - Newsletter #3
It is important that when you get blood work done that you ask for a C-reactive protein test, as it is a more important indicator of your potential for heart disease than a cholesterol reading.
- JointStart Premium Versus Serrapeptase. - Newsletter #2
The most common usage of both these products is as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory drugs, to treat conditions of pain and inflammation. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sports injuries and post-operative swellings. Serrapeptase is also used for conditions involving arterial plaque build-up including arteriosclerosis, phlebitis (vein inflammation) and varicose veins.
- Sunglasses, Vitamin A and Your Lungs. - Newsletter #1
This pharmacological study done with healthy males, found that neither Ginkgo Biloba Extract (80mg three times daily) nor ginger root (1200mg three times daily) affected bleeding time or how the drug (Warfarin) was absorbed and metabolized.
VITAMINS

- Sunglasses, Vitamin A and Your Lungs.
As a nutritional consultant I am often called upon to help people with lung conditions, whether it is asthmatic or just a nagging cough that won’t go away. I inevitably, after offering some help for the immediate symptoms, end up talking about vitamin A. To me this is one of the most under-rated vitamins, and one that most people have been made afraid of.
- The Problem with "Mega Vitamin Packs"
The first and most obvious problem with old school mega-vitamin packs, is the outdated idea that you can’t have too many B vitamins. It is not as simple as just having the world’s most expensive urine (that bright yellow color is the B’s spilling over into the urine). Excess vitamins are a burden on the liver. This is why you will find people who get nauseous from vitamins, more so with people who take vitamins on an empty stomach. So we must appreciate that vitamin pills are not “natural” per say.
- The Basics of Supplementation
So, you don’t fancy going through 10 bottles of vitamins every morning, and you go looking for the best “one-a-day multiple vitamin and mineral” that you can find. The problem is: no one tablet can provide sufficient quantities of everything you need, especially vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium and magnesium. Were these to be included at adequate levels in one pill, it would be impossible to swallow.
- How to take Nutripods
As with most vitamin and mineral pills, the "Pod" should be consumed with a proper meal; that is one with a mix of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Not with just a piece of fruit or a protein shake. Fat in pill form (i.e. Fish oil, Vit. E, Vit. A, Vit. D,) requires fat in the mouth (as part of the meal) in order to signal the stomach which digestive enzymes to release. Minerals digest best in the presence of high stomach acid, which eating protein stimulates. And nutrients are delivered throughout the body more efficiently in the presence of carbohydrates (though complex carbs are the preferred choice.)
JOINT PAIN
- Arthritis Pain
When many people hear the word "Arthritis" their immediate association is with the word "Pain". These are the ones who have some personal experience with some variation of the disease.

WEIGHT LOSS

Sensible tips for sensible weight loss.
- Fat Burning Foods
Check out these great food sources that can play a large role in your health
- This is a Protein, This is a Carb
Physical exertion, whether aerobic, weight training, or just a vigorous walk, in the absence of sufficient protein will cause the body to consume muscle instead of fat.
- Bloodtype & Weight Loss
When someone asks for advice on weight loss products, we usually begin with a thermogenic product to jumpstart their metabolism. This helps a person achieve a quicker response when they begin a total program, and also helps keep their enthusiasm up, for the sometimes - difficult lifestyle changes they are undergoing.
- Fiber & Weightloss
Obesity is a disease associated with a low fiber diet, and even if we are only looking to shed a few unwanted pounds, it serves us well to understand the relationship between fiber and fat.
- Exercise and Carbs
The Atkins Diet has received widespread acceptance among consumers in the last couple of years, even though it was developed decades ago. Since the last broad approach to weight loss (namely the low fat diet) proved to be ineffective, people in general re-discovered the Atkins Diet (based on low carbohydrate intake,) and word of mouth spread its’ effectiveness.
- Nutrition and Weightloss
Many people think of a natural vitamin and mineral supplement as something used just to maintain basic health and well being. But when they find themselves taking 6 capsules of a herbal supplement, to aid their weightloss program, they may decide that they can forgo their regular vitamin regimen. Quite the contrary. Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and enzymes all have a role to play in a balanced weightloss program.
ENERGY
- Lack of Energy
This is a common complaint these days. However, when one goes "seeking energy" it is good to remember the old adage: "There is no such thing as a free lunch." The cup of coffee, can of soda, cigarette or ephedrine pill will give you temporary energy, but you are going to pay for it later.
- Energy Tips
Prolonged stress leads to adrenal exhaustion, so it is critical to learn to reduce stress and or to find better ways to deal with it.
NUTRITION TIPS
- Ten Winning Foods
The next time you are out grocery shopping, make sure you add some of the following foods to your shopping list. They can play a large role in your quality of life!
- Protein
What exactly is protein? Protein is made up of chains of amino acids. There are approximately 29 commonly known amino acids. In the body the liver produces about 80% of these (known as nonessential amino acids). The remaining 20% of amino acids (called essential amino acids) we must get from our diet.
- Fibre is Good
We know that fiber keeps us regular and helps lower high cholesterol levels. Now a new study (The Seasonal Variation of Blood Cholesterol Levels Study) has found that “the likelihood of elevated C-reactive protein was 63% lower in participants in the highest quartile of total fiber intake than in participants in the lowest quartile.”
- Lowering Cholesterol
Lowering cholesterol has become a national past time, and with the increasing rates of heart disease, it’s easy to see why. Many doctors treat high cholesterol with drugs, but these cholesterol-lowering drugs can have serious side effects. The "Statin" drugs are a good example: they leach Coenzyme Q10 out of the body which in the long run can harm the heart muscle, the very organ it is supposed to protect.
- On the Run and Run Down
Ongoing stress and fatigue combined with a poor diet, quickly leads to nutritional deficiencies. This in turn negatively affects mood, sleep patterns and immune function.
- Coffee for Breakfast?
Many of us (including me,) jumpstart the day with a cup of coffee. Which is all well and good, unless it gets called breakfast. By the time we approach middle age our body starts displacing (i.e. eating) our muscle mass, if we don’t have protein in the morning. But it lets us keep the fat, and since muscle burns fat, the more muscle we lose over time, the harder it is to shake those extra pounds. Also, if we sweeten the coffee, we have added an insulin spike to the start of the day, leading to the ups and downs of blood sugar levels, for the rest of the day.
- E.M.F.'s and Melatonin
It is my theory that most of the things in modern life that kill us, are invisible. In the past, predators were the obvious danger. The closest to that now is the car, currently the leading cause of death until middle age, when cancer and heart disease take over. Many of the causes of cancer, heart disease, and other ailments are hidden in our foods (trans-fats, preservatives, acrylamide,) cosmetics and bodycare products (hormone disrupting and estrogen mimicking chemicals,) water (chlorine, water-borne parasites,) air (smog, chemical fumes,) and homes (dust mites, formaldahyde, molds.)
- Why Choose Tinctures?
When one chooses to use a herbal remedy there are only a few traditional options. Herbs can be prepared as a tea, which is a water extraction, they can be ground, and put into capsules or tablets, or they can be extracted in alcohol (or glycerine or vinegar) to create a tincture.
